It appears that Tottenham Hotspur will not have to fend off interest from Real Madrid for Christian Eriksen in the summer.
It has long been suggested that the Spanish giants see the Dane as a potential recruit for the summer. However, Diario AS is now reporting that Real have decided to close the book on this potential signing.
The reason why has something to do with one former Tottenham hero.
Eriksen has been earmarked as a potential replacement for Luka Modric. The Croatian turns 34 in September and is out of contract in 2020. As initially reported by Gazetta dello Sport, Real’s indecision left Modric seeking a move away, with Inter Milan the likely destination.

However, Modric’s form has, according to AS, convinced Real to offer him a new deal. They will then put their faith in young talent Dani Ceballos to eventually take his place in the Real first-team. Modric would then be expected to retire as a Real player.
It means that Modric and Real’s apparent desire to remain attached has left Eriksen out of Los Merengues’ interest.
TBR’s View
With Barcelona agreeing a deal for Frenkie De Jong, Tottenham must strike now when it comes to renewing Eriksen’s contract.
The lack of other viable options away from Spurs, and with the new stadium finally near completion, now is the perfect opportunity for Tottenham to secure Eriksen beyond 2020.
They will need to offer him the right wages to convince him but after a January with no new recruits and with the season approaching crunch-time, this would be the perfect moment to secure Eriksen’s long-term future.
