Luis Suarez’s post-retirement comments on Steven Gerrard should have Rangers fans excited for Alfredo Morelos

Steven Gerrard has been singing the praises of his striker Alfredo Morelos this week. The Colombian striker has been thriving under the former Liverpool midfielder this season. His record of 16 goals in 26 games so far this season has to be appreciated but does not highlight his overall impact up front.

Of course, he does have his downfalls. Morelos plays on the edge and his hyper-combative style has seen him in trouble this campaign. Two red cards and 10 yellows from his 26 appearances highlight that fact. Tonight, against Villarreal, he will be on the brink of another suspension but Rangers need him at his edgy best to get the better of the La Liga side.

His aggressive style and passionate displays, as well as his strength, pace and finishing, have seen him compared to Luis Suarez in the past. Now, the Rangers boss has himself made that comparison.

“Does he remind me of Suarez? He does actually, yeah. A lot…

“I loved playing with Suarez, he was my favourite player to play with – and I have already expressed how much I love Alfredo.”

If Gerrard can form a similar bond with Morelos at Ibrox, as he did with Suarez at Anfield, then Rangers fans are in for a treat.

Gerrard was a brilliant supporter and mentor for the Uruguayan at Liverpool. Before he headed to Barcelona in a £65 million deal in 2014 Suarez was an anti-hero of sorts in the Premier League.

In 2013, Gerrard labelled him the ‘best player in the Premier League’ amid the controversy surrounding Suarez biting Branislav Ivanovic. Gerrard again stood by his pal when Suarez did it again, to Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

Throughout Suarez’s struggles, Gerrard stood by him and it led to this emotional tribute from Suarez when Gerrard retired from the game…

If Gerrard can forge such a relationship with Morelos it can only see Rangers get the best out of the combustible Colombian.

Who knows? Maybe he will be worth £65 million himself one day down the line.
