Arsenal loanee Lucas Torreira could reportedly have his season-long loan at Atletico Madrid cancelled in the upcoming January window after failing to hit the ground running – but his agent has told Gianluca Di Marzio that Torreira is focused on staying.

Torreira, 24, temporarily ended a two-year spell at Arsenal to join Atletico Madrid in the summer, after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta. The midfielder also spent a large part of last season out injured with an ankle problem.

He joined Atletico while Thomas Partey moved the other way. Since joining Diego Simeone’s side, he has managed just nine appearances – featuring in only five of Atletico’s eight La Liga matches since he joined the Spanish club.

He was an unused substitute on the weekend during a defeat to Real Madrid and TuttoMercatoWeb claim that he could have his loan spell cancelled – and return to Arsenal in January. But his agent has stated that Torreira is happy at Atletico.

“Lucas is serene and has nothing in his mind beyond continuing with Atletico. He’s ending his period of adaptability,” Di Marzio reported Torreira’s agent Pablo Bentancur as saying on Tuesday evening, amid the reports.

TBR’s view – What’s best for Torreira?

Stick it out at Atletico and hope he shows Simeone – when given the chance – why he deserves to start? Atletico have enormous competition in midfield; Koke, Marcos Llorente, Hector Herrera, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Saul Niguez – and Torreira.

It means that even if shines in his brief outings or in training, he will struggle for game time – and that is with Simeone playing three in central midfield. Sometimes, the Argentine prefers to use a narrow 4-4-2 system.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are struggling in central midfield. Partey has been injured, Granit Xhaka is walking a tightrope, Mo Elneny has been inconsistent and Dani Ceballos is struggling to start. Perhaps an Arsenal return could see Torreira shine?
