Would Lucas Torreira signature spell the end for Morgan Schneiderlin?

This week has seen reports in Italy suggest that Everton are joining the race to bring in Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer. Calciomercato reported in an exclusive that Everton are in touch over bringing the Sampdoria midfielder to Goodison Park in a £22 million deal. That would match his current release clause, but they are battling with both Napoli and Arsenal for the 22-year-old.

His arrival would certainly be an exciting one, given his form in Serie A this season. But what would it mean for a player who has consistently struggled to win over the Everton faithful?

Back in January 2017, Everton paid Manchester United £22 million to bring French international Morgan Schneiderlin to Merseyside. It looked a great deal and the former Southampton enjoyed a relatively impressive first six months at the club.

This season has been far less memorable.

The 28-year-old has remained a regular for much of the season, but his performances have left plenty to be admired. He has been widely criticised by his own fans after a difficult season in which he has turned out some terrible performances – especially in the club’s ill-fated Europa League campaign.

Unfortunately for Schneiderlin, he is also a victim of his own demeanour. At times he has looked disinterested at Everton and it has not played well with the fans. Whilst his form did improve slightly toward the end of the season, many fans struggle to forget the horror shows v Lyon, Southampton and Atalanta.

In all honesty, if Torreira is on his way to Everton,or indeed a different player of a similar ilk, it could spell the end of the road for Schneiderlin at Goodison Park.

Not many fans would be overly sad to see him go, despite his obvious talent. Simply put, he has failed to win the popularity contest at the club this season. If Everton could replace him with a younger £22 million model, they should definitely do it.
