Uruguay swept aside hosts Russia at the World Cup yesterday with relative ease. The 3-0 scoreline was reflective of their dominance on the day and just reward for some brilliant individual performances.
However, none were perhaps as impressive as that of Sampdoria midfield dynamo Lucas Torreira. The 22-year-old was handed his first start at the World Cup yesterday and put in perhaps one of the best individual performances of the tournament so far.
There have been some special ones. Hirving Lozano v Germany, Cristiano Ronaldo v Spain, Jesse Lingard v Panama. But Torreira’s was right up there as he covered every inch of every blade of grass in an exhausting display of midfield dynamism.
In May, Calciomercato reported in an exclusive that Everton were in touch over bringing the Sampdoria midfielder to Goodison Park in a £22 million deal. That would match his release clause, but the caveat was a battle with both Napoli and Arsenal for the 22-year-old.
It seems Arsenal have won that battle and for Everton it is devastating. Fans would have seen his performance yesterday and realised it is what they want from their midfield anchor, not the insipid displays of French disappointment Morgan Schneiderlin.
Torreira gave Everton a fair view of what they are missing out on this summer last night. Fans should be disappointed he is not Goodison Park bound.
