Arsenal confirmed yesterday that Lucas Torreira has left the club and has joined Turkish giants Galatasaray on a permanent deal.

The Uruguayan moved to the Emirates from Sampdoria for £26.5 million in the summer of 2018 (Guardian). He had a truly sensational debut season at Arsenal and quickly became a fan favourite.

Things, however, changed in the following season. Unai Emery decided to use Torreira in a more advanced role instead of playing him in his natural number six position. That completely destroyed the Uruguayan’s confidence, and he never quite recovered from that.

After two years out on loan, Arsenal had to make a decision, and they decided to move him on.

After a successful spell at Fiorentina, almost everyone believed that La Viola will sign Torreira on a permanent deal. However, the Italian outfit decided against it in the end, and the midfielder had no choice but to return to Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta, however, had made up his mind that Torreira wasn’t in his plans. The Arsenal boss took the Uruguayan on tour to the United States, but he was not given a single minute of game time.

It became clear that Torreira had to go, and after links with multiple clubs across Europe, the talented 26-year-old accepted a proposal from Galatasaray.

Right after Arsenal announced Torreira’s departure, the Uruguayan took to Instagram Stories and had his say. “Always Gunners,” he wrote followed by emojis of a heart, a flexed bicep and a football.

Torreira is a fantastic player, and it’s just a shame that things didn’t work out for him at Arsenal following his spectacular debut season at the Emirates.

He has now moved to Galatasaray and there’s every chance that he’ll be a huge hit in the Turkish top flight.

As for Arsenal, Torreira’s departure should free up some space in their squad and on their wage bill to make a move for a new midfielder in the coming days.

Torreira leaves Arsenal with an FA Cup medal after having played 89 times in all competitions for the Gunners.
