Lucas Radebe has told The Leeds United Show that Kalvin Phillips has been a revelation in the Premier League, while he also named three other players he has been hugely impressed with.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have rarely been out of the headlines since their promotion. They have produced some outstanding performances in the top flight.
And even in defeat, they have won admirers on numerous occasions. They sit in mid-table and it appears that they look to be well on their way towards securing a second consecutive campaign at the highest level.
A number of players have proved that they are not out of place playing in the Premier League. And while Radebe was keen to laud the entire team, he did pick out four men who have stood out in his mind as he discussed the impact Bielsa has had.
“You can see his passion towards the club, and that passion rubs off to the players,” he told The Leeds United Show as he discussed Bielsa. “People like Kalvin Phillips, he’s been a revelation. He’s been absolutely fantastic. Liam Cooper at the back, Struijk, Poveda. I’m so impressed with all these individuals.
“The rate that they play football, it’s absolutely amazing. For me, I wouldn’t say maybe which one stands out but I think they’re all working hard. And they’re very honest about it.”
It may surprise some to see Radebe pick out Struijk and Poveda over some others. In fairness to Radebe, it does appear he would have happily picked out every single member of the squad.
But his comments do highlight how well Struijk and Poveda have done. Neither played regularly in the Championship. And yet, they have both managed to contribute in the Premier League.
Struijk, in particular, has been excellent in recent weeks. His partnership with Luke Ayling at the heart of the defence has taken a lot of pressure off the likes of Cooper and Diego Llorente as they make their way back from injury.
Cooper and Phillips meanwhile, have shown that they are still yet to find their ceiling. The latter particularly looks to have a long career at the highest level ahead.
