Leeds United placed one hand on promotion to the Premier League and the Championship trophy thanks to a rather fortuitous 1-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Elland Road – and Lucas Radebe and Lloyd Sam have reacted.
The Whites went into the match without star man Kalvin Phillips, but with the confidence that four points from the next three league games was enough. They picked up three of those four with the win over Barnsley.
Despite the match being end to end throughout, only one goal was scored in the first half. Mateusz Klich’s defence-splitting pass found Patrick Bamford, whose cross was turned into his own net by Michael Sollbauer.
Barnsley had numerous chances to get an equaliser. Sollbauer himself had a header straight as Illan Meslier, while Conor Chaplin flashed a couple of efforts past Meslier’s far post. Cauley Woodrow was a threat.
Marcelo Bielsa’s normally flawless system was being unhinged. So much so that the Argentine tinkered throughout, even bringing rookie defender Pascal Struijk on and placing him in central midfield.
But Leeds held on to a crucial win and go five points clear of second-placed West Brom, and six ahead of Brentford. Just one point is needed, and West Brom’s failure to beat Huddersfield on Friday could also see Leeds promoted.
Former Leeds winger Lloyd Sam – who is currently playing for Miami FC in the second tier of American soccer – and Leeds legend Lucas Radebe both reacted on Twitter, applauding their former side.
