Reported Newcastle United target Lucas Paqueta was in attendance at the Magpies’ match last night.

The Lyon star told Newcastle ace – and former teammate – Bruno Guimaraes he’d be in the crowd for the match at Southampton.

Paqueta was treated to another Magpies victory as they ran out 2-1 winners at St Mary’s.

Better still, Guimaraes scored a stunning winner on his first start for Newcastle.

The hosts took the lead on 25 minutes through Stuart Armstrong’s header.

However, Chris Wood equalised in the 32nd minute, his first goal for the Magpies.

And then, in the 52nd minute, Guimaraes scored with an exquisite backheel volley.

Paqueta loved what he saw, and reacted with a two-word message on Twitter:

The result extended Newcastle’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to nine matches.

Eddie Howe’s charges are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

“A strong, well-rounded midfielder”

French outlet Le10 Sport linked Paqueta with a move to Newcastle in December, valuing him at around £34million.

The 24-year-old is one of the most highly-rated talents in Ligue 1 and has already made 29 appearances for Brazil.

Paqueta has also made 65 outings for Lyon, including 31 this season, registering nine goals and five assists.

He is a versatile player who has featured up front, in central midfield, at No. 10, and on the right wing this term.

In 2020, Ligue 1 Analysis wrote: “At his best, Paqueta is a strong, well-rounded midfielder.

“He has fantastic positional awareness, dribbling ability, and he can efficiently recover the ball.

“Paqueta also shows that he is willing to help his team on the defensive end.

“Thanks to his strong positional awareness, he can position himself effectively when in the defensive phase.”
