Lucas Moura has labelled Erik Lamela an amazing player, and insisted – in comments reported by Football London – that his Spurs teammate is a pleasure to play with.
Lamela stole many of the headlines following Tottenham’s North London Derby defeat at the weekend. His game ended prematurely after he picked up two yellow cards in quick succession in the second-half.
However, that only came after the 29-year-old had produced one of the greatest goals the Premier League has ever seen.
The Argentinian found the bottom corner with a Rabona finish that nutmegged Thomas Partey to break the deadlock.
It was Lucas who provided the assist for the attacker. And ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie with Dinamo Zagreb, the Brazilian insisted that it was not a surprise to see Lamela produce such a finish.
“It was a surprise for almost everyone but not for us because we know him very well and he does this in the training sessions almost every week,” he said, as reported by Football London. “He is an amazing player and has this quality. It was the only thing he could do in that action. He did very well as it is not easy. He already scored a goal like this in the past but in a derby is even more special.
“Unfortunately we didn’t win the game because if he won the game with that goal it would be even more special for him, but Lamela is an amazing team-mate and for me it is a pleasure to play with him.”
It was arguably a game that summed up Lamela’s time at Tottenham reasonably well. There have been the moments of sensational quality. But there have also been times when the £80,000-a-week star has made costly and needless errors.
Lucas’s comments would suggest that his teammates are choosing to focus on his goal. And it will be extremely interesting to see whether Lamela decides to spring another surprise in the coming games.
