Tottenham Hotspur supporters have had to deal with a wide range of emotions since the season’s resumption.
Heading into the North London derby, there had been two wins, two draws, and one painful defeat at Sheffield United. And in truth, one of those draws – the stalemate at Bournemouth – probably felt just as deflating for the fans.
But Jose Mourinho’s men certainly gave the supporters something to smile about as the campaign edges towards its conclusion as Tottenham came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 on Sunday.
A number of players seemed to step up their game following the drab draw with the Cherries. And, based on one statistic in particular, one of those men certainly appears to have been Lucas Moura.
Lucas has not scored or provided an assist in the league since February. And despite the win, he will go into Wednesday’s trip to Newcastle still looking to end that run.
But there was one aspect of his superb performance that Mourinho will surely be delighted with.
10 Tackles won
According to Whoscored.com, Lucas won 10 successful challenges during the victory. Remarkably, that was eight more than any of his Spurs teammates.
But, perhaps even more staggeringly, Lucas – who was subbed off with just under 10 minutes remaining – won as many successful challenges as Arsenal’s starting lineup managed combined.
Dani Ceballos led the way for the visitors with four. Meanwhile, Shkodran Mustafi, Alexandre Lacazette and Hector Bellerin managed six between them.
Given that Lucas also seemed to be tasked with making sure that Arsenal had little joy down Spurs’s left flank, Mourinho must be pleased to see the forward make such a contribution.
His run without a goal may continue, but following the win, Mourinho may feel that what Lucas did provide was just as important as one.
