Lucas Moura continues to show Tottenham value despite Bale and Bergwijn pressure
Tottenham won out in Europe last night as Jose Mourinho’s side ensured a smooth enough evening in Ludogrets thanks to a 3-1 win.
Mourinho made a few changes to the ranks once again. The likes of Lucas Moura, Gareth Bale, and Harry Winks all getting minutes in the bank thanks to Tottenham’s squad size.
A number of players put in good performances, too. And in a squad that possesses so much quality, it’s important for players to seize their chance when it does come along for Spurs.
One man who continues to do that and showed his full potential last night was the aforementioned Lucas. The Brazilian, signed for a reported £23m back in 2018, scored and laid on a goal for Harry Kane in a fine performance.
It is testament, then, to Lucas that he continues to provide the goods even in the midst of potentially being cast aside at the club.
Lucas’ heart must have sank in the summer when Spurs opted to sign Gareth Bale. A world-class winger arriving to play a position that Lucas currently occupied, not the ideal tonic for the former PSG man.
Furthermore, Spurs also signed Steven Bergwijn in January. Again, a right winger who enjoyed an explosive start to life in north London before tailing off somewhat pre and post lockdown.
But Lucas is showing the sort of fight Jose Mourinho wants from his players. Not content with simply lying down and allowing Bale or Bergwijn to push him aside, the speedy Tottenham ace has got his head down and worked hard.
It’s a long old season for Spurs. They need players buying into what Jose Mourinho is trying to do. It is, afterall, a squad game and squads, not first XI’s win trophies.
Lucas Moura, then, is the perfect player and a fine example of how to play your part in a winning team.
