Luca Cecconi urges Bologna to not sign Spurs star Erik Lamela

Former Bologna player and coach Luca Cecconi has told Tuttomercatoweb that Erik Lamela would not be a good signing after the Serie A club’s director of football hinted that they could target the Spurs star this summer.

Lamela’s future looks to be somewhat up in the air heading into the summer. As noted by Football London, he is out of contract at Tottenham at the end of next season.

That leaves Spurs with a decision to make in the coming months. And what may make their decision all the more difficult is interest from elsewhere.

Bologna’s director of football Walter Sabatini told Resto Del Carmino this week that he is a player that the club will consider.

Interestingly, those comments do not appear to have gone down entirely well amongst everyone associated with the club.

Cecconi – who played more than 50 times for the side and went on to work in various backroom roles – urged the club to pursue other targets.

“Lamela does not convince me, he does not fall into the category of players I was referring to before,” he told Tuttomercatoweb. “For him, joining Bologna would be a step backwards. The stimuli would not be among the highest. Beyond player value, it would not be a good choice”.

Lamela has shown that he remains capable of moments of sheer brilliance. And he is a player whose work-rate can rarely be questioned.

However, his tally of three goals in all competitions is underwhelming. He is also yet to provide an assist in the Premier League this season.

He would not come cheap either. Spotrac shows that he is on £80,000-a-week in North London. So it may be deemed a gamble for his next club should they make a move this summer.

He would certainly have a point to prove in Cecconi’s eyes if he did join them.
