Aston Villa goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic has been discussing his former club Hajduk Split, amid rumours of his possible departure from Villa Park. The Sunday Mirror (01/09/2019, pg 67) report that Aston Villa are ‘desperate to offload’ the Croatian before the close of the European transfer deadline later today.
Kalinic is now behind summer signing Tom Heaton in the pecking order as well as Jed Steer after failing to impress following a January move from Gent.
This weekend, Kalinic was in fact back in his homeland. As reported by Slobodna Dalmacija, the keeper watched his former club Hajduk Split defeat Dinamo Zagreb in a huge game in the Croatian domestic season. He even spoke to the publication about visiting a place he still considers ‘home’.
“We all enjoyed it, the stadium erupted. I’m happy, currently as a fan. I know what that means to this club and town. That’s my club, I’m home here.”
Kalinic came through the ranks at Hajduk and is a local boy, so it is no wonder he has so much love for the club.
As for his future at Aston Villa, the club will undoubtedly want to get his wages off the bill by the end of today. As reported by The Telegraph, Kalinic cost Aston Villa £7 million in January but he has struggled with form and fitness at the club.
He lost his place to Steer last season and, according to The Sun on Sunday (30/06/2019, pg 59) Kalinic is now earning £50,000-a-week to do nothing at Villa Park.
At the moment, there appears to be little movement in a deal for Kalinic and the fact he was in Croatia on Saturday further muddies the water.
Time will tell if Aston Villa can find a new home for the player by the end of today.
