'Lost belief': Arsenal chiefs began having doubts about 25-year-old, it's why they didn't sign him – reporter

Arsenal pursuit of a last-minute midfield addition in the transfer market was unsuccessful.

The Gunners had bids for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and Palmeiras’ Danilo rejected on deadline day.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke, via Give Me Sport, has provided an update on another Arsenal target.

The journalist believes Arsenal started to have doubts over Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.

He believes the opportunity was there for Mikel Arteta’s side to sign the Belgian, but they ‘lost belief’.

O’Rourke said: “The offer of around £23m for Douglas Luiz would have been enough to land Tielemans – so I think we can take from this that Arsenal lost belief that he was the right fit for their team.

“They were interested but not interested enough.”

Arsenal had doubts over Tielemans

Arsenal have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, and their new signings have already made a big impact.

Gabriel Jesus has already been described as the player of the season so far since arriving.

Fellow Manchester City recruit Oleksandr Zinchenko has also been a revelation.

It shows that Arsenal have been very careful with the new additions made to the squad.

There were reports that Arsenal were had doubts over certain aspects of Tielemans’ game.

The Belgian clearly has plenty of talent, but Arsenal’s decision to go after Luiz and Danilo suggests they were looking for a different sort of player.

Tielemans is a creative midfielder, with an eye for a brilliant pass.

Arsenal’s other last-minute options were much more defensive than Tielemans.

With the Gunners losing Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to injury, Tielemans isn’t a perfect fit to replace either midfielder.

Tielemans might be a more viable option when his contract ends at the end of next season.

However, the 25-year-old will need to prove to Arsenal that he’s a better option than Luiz or Danilo.
