This season may be seen as the season when young English talent really began to shine abroad but before Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson took the Bundesliga by storm, Ademola Lookman blazed the trail.
The confident wideman shunned Championship advances in January to push through a move to the German top flight, joining RB Leipzig for the second half of the 2017/18 season.
Lookman bagged five goals in 11 Bundesliga matches, including the winner on his debut against Borussia Mönchengladbach, as he seized the chance to prove what he could do when given a regular run in the team and a manager who believes in him.
Who was that manager? Ralph Hasenhuttl, who has just taken the hotseat at Southampton.
Lookman remained at Everton this season but has been handed just the one start by Marco Silva and there is a danger that his progression will begin to stall for as long as he is only used as an impact sub.
So the opportunity to reunite with Hasenhuttl could well tempt Lookman down to the south coast and he is exactly the type of player the Saints need to perk up their flatlining attack.
A January move would make sense for all parties and getting in a bid – most likely a loan one – for Lookman should be near the top of the Austrian’s to-do list in his first few days in his new job.
