'Looked visibly angry': Media reacts to Liverpool star's World Cup display today
Liverpool star and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk was in World Cup action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Reds ace captained the Oranje to a 2-0 victory over hosts Qatar to finish top of Group A.
Van Dijk delivered a solid display as the Netherlands bounced back from their 1-1 draw with Ecuador.
Dutch and Dutch-leaning outlets were pleased with the Liverpool centre-back’s efforts.
Football Oranje wrote that Van Dijk ‘swept up well and dealt with anything aerially.
‘He even looked more animated than usual and looked visibly angry after some poor sloppy play by his teammates.
‘A better captain’s performance.’
Meanwhile, Voetbal Primeur wrote: ‘After the strong criticism from Marco van Basten, Van Dijk had something to prove.
‘The captain was alert and looked for the solution more often. That’s how he should play, Van Basten will think.’
‘I don’t think he is ever positive’
The Liverpool defender received criticism from Van Basten for his display against Ecuador.
Van Dijk had failed to stop Pervis Estupinan’s strike, which was parried across to goalscorer Enner Valencia.
“Van Dijk is just waiting and watching him shoot,” Van Basten told NOS – via talkSPORT – in response to Ecuador’s equaliser.
“What is he looking at? He needs to be on top of him! He just lets him shoot!
“He doesn’t take the lead. He takes care of nothing in the team. He makes a sound, but he doesn’t say anything. This is what he does.”
Van Dijk hit back at Van Basten after the match, saying: “I don’t think he is ever positive, so what am I supposed to do with it? It’s easy to talk from the studio.
“Me failing as a captain? What do you want me to do with that info?
“I am always up front. I lead the team the best way possible.”
Van Dijk certainly answered his critics with his display against Qatar.
