‘He shouldn’t be there’: Graeme Souness says £36m player is just ‘not fit’ to play for Manchester United

Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester United and insisted that Anthony Martial sums up everything wrong with the club at the moment.

Martial is not far off being in testimonial territory having signed for the club for £36m in 2015.

However, he has never ever succeeded as much as United expected him to and he has once again been inconsistent this season under Erik ten Hag.

And speaking on TalkSPORT today, former Liverpool and Rangers man Graeme Souness slammed Martial as being an example of why United are failing right now.

Speaking about Martial on TalkSPORT, Souness did not hold back in his comments.

“Look no further than Martial for what that club is all about. I wrote four or five years ago that this had to be Martial’s last chance saloon and they gave him another contract. By mentioning his name what I mean is, they have, for a decade, made consistently poor decisions on footballing matters. The most important decisions you have to get right are your recruitment, and then who you can afford to sell. Who is not fit to be a Manchester United player, who doesn’t show the right attitude. You’re playing for Man United and you’ve got players going through the motions. Martial represents for me a decade of poor decisions at that club. I tell you what happens with Martial. You watch him in training and think ‘there’s a player in there’ but how many chances does he need to prove he’s a big club player? His chance went years ago, he shouldn’t be there,” Souness said.

Martial should have been moved on

Souness has had his fair share of rants about Man United in the past and this latest one on Martial is actually bang on.

He has never ever done it in the red of United and yet he keeps getting chances under different managers and in different systems.

He’s just not good enough for what United need, frankly.

At times, he has produced nice moments and showed a good touch in front of goal. But like many at the club, he doesn’t show it often enough and needs moving on.

Whether or not the club will bite the bullet in the summer or even January, remains another debate.
