Jurgen Klopp finally appears to have found his dream centre-back partnership in Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

This season, the pair have been solid at the back and their partnership has blossomed.

Their styles of play suit each other and the more they get to know each others’ games, the better they are becoming as a unit.

But in addition to their defensive rapport, there is another reason why Gomez and Van Dijk’s partnership can help Liverpool.

Yesterday, in the UEFA Nations League, Gomez demonstrated that he has an impressive long-throw.

With England trailing at Wembley, Gomez unleashed his long-throw into the box and it led to the equaliser.

Van Dijk, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, is dominant in the air and rarely beaten in an aerial duel.

The Netherlands international is always a threat from set-pieces and the target man when corners and free-kicks are whipped into the box.

Having Gomez’s long-throw allows Liverpool to turn that into a goal threat too.

With the 21-year-old hurling balls into the box, he could set up plenty of chances for his centre-half partner to head towards goal.

Gomez and Van Dijk’s partnership can thrive at both ends of the pitch if Klopp regularly deploys this tactic.
