A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the Coluna Do Fla report claiming that the Gunners are already looking to buy on-loan defender Pablo Mari.
The report has claimed that Arsenal have made contact with Flamengo to inform them that they will activate the purchase clause in Mari’s loan deal.
This is despite the player not having made a first-team appearance for the Emirates Stadium side just yet.
In January, Arsenal reportedly paid a €5million (£4.2million) fee to take Mari on loan until the end of the season, and signing him permanently would take the total of the deal to €16million (£13.5million).
The 26-year-old joined Flamengo last year from Manchester City, where Mikel Arteta was assistant coach before making the switch to the Arsenal dugout.
Mari was on Man City’s books since 2016 but his only senior game time came from his loan stints at Girona, NAC Breda and Deportivo La Coruna.
The defender made 30 appearances for the Brazilian club, scoring three goals and registering an assist (Transfermarkt) en route to the Brazilian Serie A title, the Copa Libertadores, and the Club World Cup final.
It looks as though Arteta likes what he’s seen from Mari behind the scenes and as such he could potentially become Arsenal’s first signing next summer, if the report is to be believed.
Here is what some Arsenal fans have made of the speculation:
