Loic Remy says he was ‘supposed to sign for Liverpool’ in 2014

Loic Remy has told The Independent that he was “supposed to sign for Liverpool” back in the summer of 2014, only for the Frenchman to fail a medical and instead move to Chelsea.

Remy, 32, scored 14 goals in 27 Newcastle appearances during a loan spell from QPR. He was set to leave QPR again in 2014, but this time on a permanent deal. A move to Liverpool nearly came about, and Remy even says he underwent a medical.

But the 31-time France international failed that medical which took place in Boston, America during the Reds pre-season tour. Later on in the window, Remy moved to Chelsea and help the Blues win the Premier League – Liverpool finished sixth.

Now, Remy is set to take on Chelsea with French side Lille in the Champions League, and the former Blues striker spoke of how he almost joined Liverpool before failing a medical and moving to Stamford Bridge instead.

“I was supposed to sign for Liverpool. I went for the medical in Boston, then apparently I failed the medical,” Remy said. “For me, everything happens for a reason, which means at the end of the day, Chelsea. We had a fantastic season. This year Liverpool had been in trouble, it was not the Liverpool of the previous season.”

TBR’s view – Would Remy have been a good signing for Liverpool?

During the 2014-15 season for Chelsea, Remy scored nine goals in 28 matches and it is fair to say that his best form has come either at Newcastle – or indeed in his home country.

Had he been given a starting role, Remy may have made more of an impact. He had Didier Drogba, though he was 37, and Diego Costa to tend with. At Liverpool, he would have got more game time.

That is because the Reds boasted Daniel Sturridge, who was in excellent form, but also Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert who did not hit the heights expected of them at Anfield. It is difficult to tell if Remy would have been better at Liverpool.
