Lloyd Jones never became the ‘next Carragher’ at Liverpool and is struggling since Anfield exit

This time last year Liverpool allowed Lloyd Jones to move on and try and make his big break elsewhere.

Jones cost Liverpool £20,000, according to the BBC, in 2011. The versatile Welsh youth international, who later went on to represent England, was highly rated and expected to have a bright future at Liverpool.

He sat on the bench for Liverpool on the final day of the 2012-13 season. Just 17-years-old at the time, he watched on as Jamie Carragher played his final game for the Reds. Many felt the baton could eventually be passed down.

That never happened. Jones signed a pro deal with the club that summer but had to bide his time once again. Loan spells at Cheltenham Town and Accrington Stanley followed before he suffered a nasty injury whilst on loan at Blackpool in September 2015. Off the field issues also reared their head, with an assault charge in the summer of 2017, as reported by The Mirror..

In 2016, he signed a new two-year deal at Liverpool before heading to Swindon. However, he never really looked in the picture under Jurgen Klopp.

So, last January, he was allowed to join Luton Town for an undisclosed fee.

Jones has struggled at Kenilworth Road. He played just once last season for the club and this season has featured for just one minute of League One football for the promotion hopefuls.

At the start of the month, it was suggested the 23-year-old could head out on loan from Luton. Liverpool fans will no doubt hope he can make the breakthrough somewhere soon. He will be highly regarded among fans who saw him play. However, he never quite managed to fill the role of ‘next Carragher’ that some had predicted.
