Rodgers closes in on Liverpool's targets
Following Liverpool’s extraordinary season, Brendan Rodgers is now looking forward to the next season, in which he hopes he’ll be able to top 2nd place. Having already made his first venture into the transfer market, signing Rickie Lambert from Southampton, he is now in the lookout for a winger to boost their attacking force even more. However, Rodgers reportedly has three men in mind; Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri and Lazar Markovic. The three have all been linked in recent weeks.
England international Adam Lallana has been linked with Liverpool heavily over the last few weeks. Especially after teammate and close friend Rickie Lambert joined up with the Reds recently. The winger/attacking midfielder may be up for a move as things behind the scenes at St. Mary’s start to crumble. After Mauricio Pochettino’s exit, a number of the saint’s big players are heading for the door. Lallana could be just what Liverpool need, he’s exciting and he brings creativity to the pitch. One of Lallana’s key assets is his passing ability, and how he can create chances. With five assits and nine goals, he has the qualities that Brendan Rodgers is looking for. He will be hopeful to showcase these skills in Brazil at the World Cup.
Another player who will be representing his team at the World Cup is Xherdan Shaqiri. The pacey Swiss is another target for Brendan Rodgers. At a tender age of just 22, Shaqiri has made 43 appearances for Bayern Munich since joining in 2012 from FC Basel. Shaqiri may be tempted by a move to England, and I’m sure Bayern could be persuaded by a big enough sum of money. Shaqiri’s pace and his direct running could be a big help in Liverpool’s push next season. Although he doesn’t score a great deal of goals, he gets at defenders and takes them on, which suits Liverpool’s style of play very well.
The final of Rodgers’ shortlist is Croatian youngster Lazar Markovic. The Benfica playmaker has been the subject of much interest from the Premier League and other European teams. The Serb looks very promising and his composure and flair have meant that he has 13 caps for his national side. Standing at just 5ft 9 inches, the nippy winger gets at defences, much like Shaqiri. However, I feel that Markovic is better suited to the Premiership than Shaqiri. I also think that he has more potential, and has the class now to make an impact on the Premier League.
Therefore, Markovic is the man for Liverpool, I think. Lallana would be my backup as he is more experienced and he knows the Premiership. The Reds face tough competitions for Markovic however, as Chelsea are reportedly interested in the Serb. Markovic would be the man that makes the difference to Liverpool’s season should they sign him.
