Liverpool’s midfield creatvity issue cannot be solved in the transfer market

There has been a growing concern this season that Liverpool lack a midfield playmaker at the heart of their title-chasing side and the fact that Andre Gomes was the best player on the pitch in Sunday’s Merseyside derby will have done nothing to quell that fear.

Everton’s loan deal for Gomes does not cast the best light on Jurgen Klopp’s big-money summer outlay in the engine room, which saw him lavish a huge sum to land both Naby Keita and Fabinho too boost his midfield options.

There is little doubt that Klopp lacks a degree of subtlety in the centre of the pitch but that is because he has handpicked midfielders who are perfect for his pressing system.

In Klopp’s mind, the tactic of rushing up the pitch and winning the ball deep into opposition territory will create more chances than any sole midfield playmaker can through craft and vision.

The reason Liverpool have lacked creativity this season is because Klopp appears to have told his side to play in a more restrained fashion; with less emphasis on midfield pressing in order to save his players’ legs across the length of a gruelling season.

No matter who Klopp may wish to buy in January, his midfield will still struggle to create chances until they are let off the leash once more to win the ball high up the pitch.
