Liverpool’s desperate decision for Ben Woodburn reflects Sheffield United failure

Sunday afternoon saw an unprecedented decision for Liverpool as they opted to call-up Ben Woodburn to play for their under 23’s side to give him much needed game time which he is not getting whilst on loan at Sheffield United.

Having made just one start for the Championship team and not even been included in the 18 man squad for any of their past four matches, the decision was taken for him to play against Derby under 23’s.

Such a decision is not one that the club has taken with any other player in recent years and reflects just what a disaster the transfer has become.

Still only 19-years-old, Woodburn has not kicked on over the past season or two as many had hoped. That he cannot even get in the picture of a second tier club does little to suggest that he is on the verge of doing so either.

Getting the best out of the Welshman remains a challenge for Neil Critchley and Jurgen Klopp. He clearly has potential and made an impact right from his debut, but he is yet to take the next step.

If that takes place on Merseyside, rather than in Yorkshire, it will be a short-term blow, but it could turn out to be a long-term investment in his future.
