Jose Mourinho told Jurgen Klopp immediately after the full-time whistle that he felt the best team had lost, after Liverpool secured a late win over Tottenham – and Trent Alexander-Arnold has cheekily reacted on Twitter.
First took on second in a contrast of styles that saw Mourinho’s rigid, counter-attacking side take on Klopp’s heavy-metal Liverpool at Anfield in front of a handful of supporters. Liverpool scored first, through Mo Salah.
But the Egyptian’s deflected effort was instantly cancelled out, as Gio Lo Celso burst forward and played in Son Heung-min, who netted with aplomb. The winner came in injury time, in the form of Roberto Firmino’s header.
The two managers had somewhat of a brief dispute on the touchline after the full-time whistle and Mourinho confirmed after the match that he told Klopp he felt the best side on the night had suffered defeat.
Liverpool dominated the chances, territory and possession yet only just managed to see off Spurs who defended well throughout. Alexander-Arnold took to Twitter, and had a cheeky shot at Mourinho with a three-word verdict.
TBR’s view – Liverpool certainly more exciting, just different style
In terms of executing their style, both sides certainly did that. Tottenham were more than solid and it only took a deflection and a set-piece for Liverpool to carve them open – while the Reds failed to beat the block.
Spurs probably executed their style better than Liverpool on the night. But in terms of who was the better team in a footballing capacity? Clearly, Liverpool’s ethos is much better on the eye.
What is for certain, is that both teams are in a title race and will be there come May.
