On a remarkable night in which Ben Woodburn became the club’s youngest ever scorer, beating Michael Owen’s record, Jurgen Klopp praised the 17-year-old and his team’s performance, saying:
“We know what Ben’s capable of. My first job is to make these players be their best. I am really happy for him, I am only worried about you [media] all getting carried away! [The chance] was not too difficult… I would probably have scored it too! All the young boys did really well, in a very important game – a quarter final. We make these lineups to win the game. 4 weeks ago, we had no clean sheets. Now we get clean sheets but don’t score 6 goals any more… We are in a good moment but we have to carry on. Hopefully it stays like this.”
Klopp made eight changes to his starting line-up from that which beat Sunderland at the weekend, but with an assist from Trent Alexander-Arnold and a goal from Ben Woodburn, those changes were justified.
West Brom have dropped their interest in Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho according to the Daily Star, who say that his most likely destination will now be Inter Milan or AC Milan. Tony Pulis tried to sign the Frenchman on loan in the summer, but has now prioritised a move for a midfielder and a striker instead.
The former PSG man knows that his Liverpool career is over and it is now just a matter of where he will go rather than if he will go after Jurgen Klopp held talks with the defender.
He is likely to be replaced in the pecking order by young England youth international Joe Gomez, who has returned from over a year out with a knee injury and is nearing a first team return after completing 90 minutes for the under 23s against Derby on Monday night.
The ex-Charlton man was chosen to play at Pride Park rather than with the first team against Leeds as Klopp ensures that he is fully fit before risking him in first team action.
