Liverpool have enquired about signing Brescia starlet Sandro Tonali.
That’s according to the club’s president, former Leeds United owner and chairman, Massimo Cellino.
18-year-old Tonali has played 18 games in Serie B this season and has caught the eye with his brilliant range of passing and technical ability.
Tonali scooped the Serie B Footballer of the Year award for 2018 and his stock has been rising rapidly.
Speaking about the promising youngster, Cellino told Corriere dello Sport: “Yes, Roma have asked me about Tonali. I’ve talked about him to [Roma director Mauro] Baldissoni several times, but I want to keep the lad as long as possible.
“Is he ready? I don’t know, he’s 18. But Liverpool also contacted me a little while ago.”
The ‘next Pirlo’ could be Liverpool’s next Alonso
Tonali has been frequently likened to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo in that, he does not possess an abundance of pace but has a superb range of passing.
Tonali is able to dictate the pace of games from deep midfield positions.
If Liverpool are genuinely interested in Tonali, then he could become the next Xabi Alonso at Anfield.
Alonso was very similar to Pirlo; the Spaniard never had a turn of pace but was famed for his incredible passing range and consistency.
If Tonali has a similar play style to that of Pirlo, then the chances are he’s a lot like Alonso too.
