Liverpool enjoyed a decent enough summer in the transfer market as both them and title rivals, Manchester City, were relatively quiet by their own standards.

The Reds signed Kostas Tsimikas, while Diogo Jota also arrived late in the day, as did Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich. All three will prove invaluable signings, with Jota, in particular, already impressing.

However, one player who Liverpool missed out on was Spanish starlet, Ferran Torres. Crucially, the young winger joined title rivals City and he has made a fast start to life in the Premier League as well as on the international stage.

A stunning hat-trick against Germany last night underlined his potential, while he’s already filled in across the entire front three for Pep Guardiola this season.

It goes without saying, then, at just £21m, City appear to have a huge bargain on their hands while Liverpool could be left to rue a missed opportunity.

Options

One of the reasons Liverpool signed Diogo Jota was to give them more options at the top of the pitch. Roberto Firmino has seen the goals dry up, while Divock Origi remains inconsistent and the club opted to sell young striker, Rhian Brewster, to Sheffield United.

Of course, Jota has been an excellent addition. But you can’t help but wonder why the club didn’t pursue Torres further if their reported interest was concrete.

£21m is nothing in today’s market. Especially for a player who is so young, talented, and versatile in the forward positions.

And at a time when the Reds are suffering defensively with injuries, having the opportunity to mix things up that little bit more up top with players of genuine quality, would have been a boost.

Liverpool fans can only sit and wonder what might have been when it comes to Torres now. One thing is for sure, though, and that’s if City to snatch the title with Torres instrumental, it will not sit nice with those at Anfield.
