Liverpool want to sign £21m midfielder likened to N’Golo Kante after Marseille open bidding for Wataru Endo

Liverpool are now keen to sign a new defensive midfielder after Marseille started bidding for Wataru Endo.

The Japan international has just been the subject of a £11.8m offer from the French giants – a bid Liverpool have rejected – although regardless of whether he stays or goes, Michael Edwards appears to be keen on signing a new No.6 anyway.

So, who could Liverpool now sign to either compete against, or replace, Wataru Endo? Let’s take a look…

Liverpool want Morten Frendrup

A story from Tutto Mercato Web states that Liverpool now want to sign Morten Frendrup.

The Italian news outlet believe Liverpool are “above all” other clubs in the race to sign the Danish midfielder, with Aston Villa also hot on his tail.

Tutto Mercato Web believe interest from Liverpool has been “raining down” on Frendrup since the end of last season, with plenty of enquiries made, as well as a mystery €25m (£21m) bid from an unnamed club.

Genoa consider the Dane to be unsellable, and are hoping to sign Jens Cajuste to give the 23-year-old a new partner in the heart of midfield.

Frendrup impressed for Genoa in the 2023/24 campaign, scoring two goals while also providing six assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Arne Slot could sign the new N’Golo Kante

A large portion of Liverpool fans may not know much about Frendrup, seeing as he is yet to represent Denmark on the international scene, while also never playing his football outside of his homeland or Italy.

Therefore, a comparison to a better known player may be helpful.

Interestingly, Frendrup has been compared to N’Golo Kante of all players, which is sure to please Liverpool fans.

It was Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout who made the comparison when writing a detailed scouting report on the man from Tuse.

He wrote: “His main strength is his defensive capabilities. His ability to read the game is very impressive, and he will make a lot of interceptions during a game. He is also quite fast, which allows him to often track down his opponents that are looking to create chances.

“Frendrup reminds me of N’Golo Kante. Big comparison, I know, but they share some of the same traits.

“They are both not the biggest and most intimidating midfielders, but they are fast, great at reading the game, and they intercept almost everything. Both players are also good dribblers of the ball.”

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Liverpool could soon welcome Frendrup to Anfield – potentially depending on what happens with Endo.
