Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool have an 'unbelievable' player who's just so inspirational
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has waxed lyrical about Reds teammate Joel Matip.
The Cameroon international, like his fellow Liverpool centre-back, was absent for much of last season due to injury.
Jurgen Klopp’s side missed Van Dijk, Matip and Joe Gomez as they just about managed to finish in the Premier League top four.
However, Liverpool have looked much improved this season thanks to the return of key players including the above trio.
Matip has played the full 90 minutes in four out of five Premier League games so far this season.
The 30-year-old has also featured in both of Liverpool’s Champions League clashes in 2021-22.
He has been one of the Anfield side’s best performers this season and was once again impressive against Porto.
Indeed, one bit of defending against striker Mehdi Taremi saw Van Dijk applaud his defensive teammate.
Ahead of the Manchester City clash, the Liverpool media team told Van Dijk he looked like he was enjoying being around Matip again.
“Not only him, of course, but he’s a special, special character and we all appreciate him in our group,” replied the Dutchman.
“Not only for his qualities – because he’s an unbelievable defender – but as a human being as well.
“He’s how everyone should take life, I think – very easy, be nice and put a lot of things in perspective.
“We all appreciate him. But it’s just been good being around everyone.”
