Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was last night named as the runner-up for the 2019 Ballon d’Or. Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was victorious claiming his sixth title.
The decision wasn’t taken particularly well among the Reds faithful. The central defender helped Liverpool to their sixth Champions League title, whilst the Reds also claimed 97 points in the Premier League.
Van Dijk defender was sensational throughout 2019 and also led Holland to the Nations League Final where they were beaten by Portugal.

Perhaps the Ballon d’Or should be taken with a pinch of salt. It does seem to be nothing more than a glorified popularity contest and the Liverpool man will surely move on quickly.
It’s fair to suggest that Liverpool fans don’t agree with the outcome.
The Reds did have four players in the top eight of the rankings. The defender was joined by Alisson, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in the higher echelons of the award.

It was the fact that Van Dijk didn’t win that caused the most conversation among Liverpool fans, however.
The Reds supporters took to Twitter to vent their frustrations and here is a selection of Tweets from those of a Liverpool persuasion:
