Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk capped an impressive 12 months last night by claiming the UEFA Player of the Year at an awards ceremony in Monaco (BBC Sport). The Dutch defender adds the accolade to his PFA Player of the Year which he won at the end of last season.

The Reds won their sixth Champions League title last season with van Dijk the focal point of boss Jurgen Klopp’s defensive unit.

The man with 26 caps for his country played 50 times in all competitions last season, playing a big part in Liverpool’s magnificent season domestically and in Europe.

At last night’s awards ceremony he pipped elite attackers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo the top prize and could now be favourite to claim the Ballon d’Or.

The centre-back is paid £180,000-a-week (Spotrac) at Anfield and is comfortably the best defender in the Premier League. His award from the continent’s governing body will only serve to enhance his status as a master of his profession.

Following his award, Liverpool supporters were keen to pay their own tributes to the man-mountain of a defender, taking to Twitter.

Here is a selection of Tweets from the Liverpool faithful who are clearly buzzing for the Dutch destroyer:
