Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has been described as “the best centre-half” by Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, in conversation with UMM‘s YouTube channel.
The 29-year-old has been a revelation for Liverpool since joining from Southampton in January 2018 for a reported £75million fee, a sum which initially drew criticism from some quarters.
In a short space of time, Van Dijk proved essential in transforming a shaky Liverpool defence into a solid, tight-knit unit, the team reaching the Champions League final that summer.
The following season, the Dutchman helped the Reds go all the way in Europe, and in 2020, helped Jurgen Klopp’s side win the Premier League, their first league title since 1990.
Sadly, Van Dijk has been sidelined by an ACL injury since October, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be back before the end of the season.
In an interview with UMM‘s Harry Pinero, Grealish was asked whether he has the recording of him nutmegging Van Dijk in Villa’s victory over Liverpool earlier this season.
The England international said he doesn’t have it because he has too much respect for the Reds ace.
“Nah, nah”, he replied.
“You know why, because I’ve just got to put too much respect on his name because he’s the best centre-half and I couldn’t even try to mug him like that, because I reckon if I went one on one against him…”
“He’d dismantle you!” joked Pinero.
There can be little doubt that Van Dijk is currently one of the best, if not the best, defender in world football, and Grealish is the latest to praise the Liverpool defender.
Fingers crossed the £180,000-a-week star makes a quick return to full fitness, picks up where he left off and continues gracing the Premier League with his incredible talent.
