Liverpool urged to sign Manchester United star, and he would surely be an ideal addition - TBR View
It has been a desperately difficult time at Manchester United for Donny van de Beek, since he swapped Ajax for the Old Trafford club. His bad luck has continued, being ruled out of Euro 2020 – and Ajax legend Sjaak Swart wants him to swap clubs. He believes Liverpool would be the perfect fit.
Van de Beek, 24, has quickly emerged as one of Ajax’s best academy products in recent years. Clocking up 175 senior appearances for the Eredivisie title winners, van de Beek earned a move to Manchester United having scored 41 and created 34. But he has struggled at United.
Joining the Premier League club in 2020, the Netherlands international has failed to live up to the hype. He scored just one goal in 36 games, starting only 15 of those. It has been a disappointing campaign, and now, injury has ruled van de Beek out of Euro 2020 – as confirmed this week.
Now, Ajax legend Swart has discussed the future of van de Beek with an intriguing summer ahead. Swart believes van de Beek needs to leave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side after just a season at United – and he reckons a move to Liverpool would suit the ex-Ajax midfielder.
“That’s a choice he has to make himself,” Swart was quoted by Dutch outlet Soccer News. “He feels himself whether he should leave. He would fit right in with other clubs. If I look at Liverpool and Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or Thomas Müller, at Bayern Munich.”
Van de Beek is surely ideal for Liverpool, with Wijnaldum departing
At international level, Wijnaldum is certainly one of his country’s best players but van de Beek is seen as his long-term replacement. So, surely, at club level, van de Beek can replace Wijnaldum? The two share numerous similarities – though van de Beek is probably more attacking.
Wijnaldum’s lung capacity and stamina, as well as his ability to score crucial goals, made him a Liverpool icon. Van De Beek shares his work rate, his ability to cooperate in an engine room. But what van de Beek also offers, is more goals and assists that Wijnaldum. The ideal replacement.
Whether United would sell to Liverpool, is another question. The two clubs are huge rivals, of course. Also, are United going to sell a player they only just bought for £35million (Goal) – in which they beat Tottenham to his signature? Probably not. But Liverpool will never find out unless the try.
