Liverpool urged not to sign Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos by Steve Nicol

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged the Reds against signing Real Madrid defender, Sergio Ramos, as their defensive crisis deepens.

Jurgen Klopp has seen his defensive options decimated in recent weeks. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all injured, while Andy Robertson picked up a knock with Scotland.

The January window could give the Reds the chance to bring in a new signing to ease the crisis. But Nicol, speaking to ESPN, believes someone like Dayot Upamecano would be a better option than the ageing Ramos.

“Listen, if Virgil van Dijk has a setback and it’s going to take even longer, if Joe Gomez is struggling, you’d rather go for someone like Upamecano, at 21, who you’re going to have for a decade. It’s kind of a no-brainer. If you can’t get him, then you kind of start going down the list.

“You really want to avoid stop-gaps, unless you’re in a real hole. So, listen, if they got Ramos it would only be for a couple of seasons. I think he’s on the wane a little. But it wouldn’t be the worst signing ever, he would do a job. But even he’s injured today, he did his hamstring.”

Four-time Champions League and World Cup winner Ramos could be coming to the end of his Madrid career. PSG are said to be keen on the Spaniard, who has yet to come to terms on a new deal in Madrid just yet.

Age is but a number with some players and that’s certainly the case when it comes to Sergio Ramos. He’s still in fantastic shape physically and is a born winner. His record speaks for itself.

Nicol has a point when it comes to stop gaps but if Liverpool could get Ramos, there is no way they turn him down. Although, it seems a bit of a stretch to even consider him a potential signing.
