Liverpool: Top Premier League defender wanted; Gerrard decision made; Southampton starlet interest
Jurgen Klopp is hoping to tempt Southampton ace Virgil Van Dijk away from St Mary’s only seven months into a six year deal, say the Express. The central defender is in high demand as the Saints continue their fine run of form with cleansheets, such as that which prevented the Reds from scoring for just the third time this season.
The Netherlands international is not seeking a move away from the south coast but Liverpool have moved into favourites to sign the former Celtic defender in January, though a summer move seems more likely should Liverpool qualify for the Champions League with Van Dijk exactly the kind of strength in depth needed.
Steven Gerrard has turned down the opportunity to manage League 1 team MK Dons and is set for a return to Anfield in a coaching capacity, according to the Mirror. The legend and former captain has reportedly held talks with Academy boss Alex Inglethorpe over what kind of role he could take up.
The local lad was keen not to take up a symbolic role at the club and wanted to be involved in a coaching role that would have importance in bringing through the next generation of Liverpool stars.
Liverpool are keeping an eye on Southampton’s young left back Sam McQueen, who has failed to agree a new deal and could be available on a Bosman deal in the summer, like the signing of Joel Matip this summer, only a hefty compensation fee would be required due to his age, say the Mirror.
The youngster has broken into the Southampton first team this season after a loan spell at Southend United in League 1 last season but is now seeking to show that he can maintain a place in the Premier League.
