Wigan Athletic striker Joe Gelhardt – who is a reported Liverpool target – had the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool’s U23 team clashed with Wigan’s youth side in a cup fixture. Liverpool won the match 3-2 but Gelhardt passed his audition with flying colours – scoring both of Wigan’s goals.

Liverpool want Gelhardt

According to a report by Goal, Gelhardt is a target for both Everton and Liverpool. The Liverpool-born starlet seems to have slipped through the net at Merseyside with Wigan taking him as a schoolboy.

But he could be heading back to his hometown soon if one of the two Liverpool-based clubs win the race. Seen as one for the future, Liverpool are hot on the trail of Gelhardt. The 17-year-old is a top young talent and he already has a senior goal to his name.

Gelhardt’s performance against Liverpool U23s would have enhanced his chances of earning a move to Anfield. With Liverpool youth coaches watching, Gelhardt netted twice for Wigan in the 3-2 loss.

The teenager twice beat Caoimhin Kelleher with low shots – showing why he was a substitute for Wigan at the weekend. Although Liverpool won the game, Gelhardt caught the eye and the Reds could see just how good he is firsthand.

TBR’s view

Gelhardt has shown why he could be a shrewd purchase. After signing Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg in the summer, Gelhardt would be another signing in that mould. He is a young player who will spend most of his time in the U23 team but he has the ability to push for occasional first-team chances.

The England U18 starlet recently scored his first-ever senior goal. The sky is the limit with this kid and his latest performance should prompt Liverpool into action.
