Liverpool target has no intention of returning to training as he aims to force a transfer elsewhere

Liverpool have thus far been frustrated in their efforts to add to their squad this summer as the transfer window prepares to draw to a close.

With midfielder reinforcements hailed as the priority, Liverpool launched a move for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

However, the Spaniard rejected advances from Anfield in favour of staying at his boyhood club, signaling a massive blow to Arne Slot.

Now, it appears as if one of their transfer targets is agitating for a move before the deadline, with reports from Italy claiming Teun Koopmeiners is unwilling to return to training for Atalanta.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Atalanta hoped Koopmeiners would return to training yesterday, but that wasn’t to be the case.

The Dutchman – alongside Ademola Lookman – didn’t train with the rest of the Atalanta squad and also missed the team lunch yesterday.

Koopmeiners emerged as Liverpool’s top target earlier this summer, but the midfielder has already agreed personal terms with Juventus ahead of a possible transfer.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini left him out of the squad for their Serie A opener against Lecce and the midfielder is unlikely to feature for the club unless his future is resolved.

What to expect from Liverpool before deadline day?

Koopmeiners is in talks to sign for Juventus and as yet Liverpool have not made a rival offer, although there are a few days left in the transfer window.

Liverpool are edging closer to signing Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but the Georgian goalkeeper is set to spend the current campaign on loan at the Mestalla as part of the deal.

The Reds tried – and failed – with their pursuits of Zubimendi and Anthony Gordon and haven’t been heavily linked with other players since, barring Mamardashvili.

There’s still enough time for things to change, but the possibility of the transfer window slamming shut without a single new addition walking through the door is starting to loom large over Anfield.
