Liverpool target Alessandro Bastoni can be as good as Chiellini, says ex-Inter man

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan and he’s a player who can be as good as Giorgio Chiellini, says one ex-Inter star.

The Metro claimed this week that the Reds were keen on a £43m deal for Bastoni. The Italian defender, 21, has emerged as one of the rising stars of Serie A and is already involved in the Italian national team set up.

And speaking to Italian radio, via a report from Sempre Inter, former Nerazzuri defender Fabio Galante believes Bastoni could be good enough to go on and replicate the career of Chiellini.

 “One player who could get close to him for how he’s going is Bastoni at Inter. He’s doing nice things despite his young age,” Galante said.

“I need to say something here though, I was talking to Fabio Cannavaro about this: unfortunately the role of a defender has changed.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is expected to make a move for a new defender this summer. The Reds have seen their title challenge wane this term after injuries have rocked their back four. Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies were brought in during January, but neither are expected to be long-term solutions.

Bastoni, then, could well be the ideal signing and the comparions to Chiellini will make interesting reading for Reds fans.

At 21, Bastoni has time on his side but already looks a top talent with the world at his feet. Of course, the Italian stereotype for defenders automatically makes you assume he is the business.

But he has impressed at Inter and you don’t get comparisons to the likes of Chiellini and Maldini without being a bit good.

At £43m, Liverpool might well get themselves a bit of a bargain if they do manage to land Bastoni.
