Liverpool-supporting pundit urges Reds to sign £35m star as summer replacement
Gini Wijnaldum is nearing a Liverpool exit this summer as his contract remains set to expire at the end of June – and Liverpool might need to start consdering replacements. Liverpool-supporting and ex-Irish midfielder David Meyler has a suggestion.
Now retired, 31-year-old Meyler has been a Liverpool supporter since childhood – as per OTB – and like many Reds fans, he will be concerned that one of the club’s most-important players in Wijnaldum is likely to leave in a matter of months.
The closer we grow to the 30 June, the less likely Wijnaldum will extend his contract at Liverpool. Barcelona and Inter Milan have been linked on numerous occasions over the course of the past season. Meyler, though, has identified his ideal replacement.
The Liverpool fan – who played for Reading, Hull, Sunderland and Ireland – has suggested Liverpool go after Leicester’s £35million (Sky Sports) midfielder Youri Tielemans in the summer as the Belgian star continues to shine for the Foxes.
“I think he’s a wonderful talent,” Meyler told OTB’s podcast. “He’s only 23 years of age, he’s only going to get better and better. Leicester are fantastic, but to go on to that next level, I’d love to see how he’d do at Liverpool. He’s a phenomenal player.”
TBR’s view – Why Tielemans is perfect as Wijnaldum’s replacement
Wijnaldum has starred under Klopp for Liverpool because he has the perfect mix of work rate and defensive abilities, the engine to be a box-to-box midfielder but also the ability to score and create important goals. Losing him is a blow.
But if Liverpool are to sign a replacement, the market is going to be small – in terms of players that offer the same qualities. Tielemans, though, does. He has the work rate, defensive stamina and is only 23. He has had a hand in 33 goals during 96 games.
The only issue for Liverpool is that Tielemans is likely to cost a fortune. Given he cost £35million, and has since played almost 100 Leicester games – the ex-Anderlecht star will cost the best part of double Leicester’s initial outlay.
