Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Napoli veteran Dries Mertens this summer with the Belgian nearing the end of his current contract with the Serie A side – and many supporters have reacted on Twitter.

Mertens, 32, is out of contract at the end of June and although Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis is confident of keeping the former PSV Eindhoven star – an announcement on his future is yet to be confirmed.

The striker is considered one of the best forwards in Serie A, but the Belgium international is yet to try his luck in the Premier League or La Liga. However, that is looking increasingly likely of changing in the coming months.

Chelsea and Inter Milan tried to sign Mertens in January but failed to do so, while ESPN have now claimed that Newcastle’s potential new owners have made contact with the player’s agent over a possible free transfer.

However, Newcastle and Chelsea are now not the only Premier League sides interested. That is because TuttoMercatoWeb reckon Liverpool are considering whether to offer the versatile attacker a three-year deal.

The report states that either Xherdan Shaqiri or Divock Origi will leave Anfield at the end of the season and Mertens will be brought to Merseyside as a replacement. Liverpool supporters have reacted on Twitter.
