Report: Liverpool have now want to keep £130k-a-week man who was told he wasn't good enough for Anfield
Liverpool might not have seen the best of big-money signing Naby Keita but they could still offer him a new contract anyway.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool would prefer to give Keita a new contract than run the risk of him leaving for nothing as his deal runs down. The Guinea star is currently out injured in what has been a recurring theme of his time at Anfield.
Recently, Paul Merson branded Keita as just simply not being good enough for Liverpool at the moment.
“Naby Keita’s signing didn’t really do much for me. I was a bit shocked when they brought him on in the Champions League final. Liverpool needed a goal, and he’s scored one goal in about a million games,” Merson said at the time.
However, Jurgen Klopp has long had faith in the midfielder and it appears the Liverpool boss is willing to keep at it in the hope of getting the best out of his £54m man. Certainly, there is a player in there and he has been branded as being an ‘incredible‘ talent as well.
TBR’s View: Keita Needs To Do More For Liverpool
The idea of a new contract is all well and good but Naby Keita simply needs to get fit, stay fit, and then produce the goods on the pitch for Liverpool.
It’s fair enough that they don’t want to lose him for nothing and lose big money. But at the end of the day, there’d be question marks around giving a player who has delivered so little yet another big deal.
Keita faces a bit of a crunch season really. With other injuries, he really needs to get back quickly and show his worth and then from there, Liverpool will have a better and more informed idea of if they want to give Keita that new contract or not.
