Steve Nicol identifies which Liverpool star he’d sell to accommodate £51m-rated signing

There has been talk of Sadio Mane leaving the club in the summer but the former player has other ideas.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Timo Werner during the summer transfer window (BILD) and legend Steve Nicol has been discussing to ESPN who should make way if he arrives.

Real Madrid have been linked with a £140 million move for Sadio Mane, according to The Mirror.

Nicol has suggested, however, that he would rather see Mohamed Salah leave the club should one of the two have to make way.

The Egyptian forward leads the way with 20 goals for Liverpool this season, making Nicol’s suggestion all the more remarkable.

Mane has 16 goals to his name during 2019/20 but if Nicol had his way it’d be Salah making way.

He told ESPN: “Unfortunately there aren’t many players like Werner around.

“What if he wants to go elsewhere? If you’re going to get £140 million for Sadio Mane and you have someone like Timo Werner available then I think you take the chance.

“If I had the choice, I would rather sell Salah, keep Mane and have Timo Werner on the other side.”

Nicol played 343 times for Liverpool winning four First Division titles, three FA Cups and one European Cup in 1984.

Suggesting Werner could replace Salah is one thing, but saying he’d have him out wide is even more bizarre.

The Red Bull Leipzig striker has been a revelation through the middle in the Bundesliga this season scoring 27 goals.

Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the player valued at £51 million but it seems unlikely that he will sign him at the expense of one of his current stars.

Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino have been integral to Liverpool’s successes of recent seasons and breaking them up seems unthinkable.

Werner would add some serious depth but it doesn’t necessarily mean that a current star would be sold to accommodate his arrival.
