Liverpool youngster Liam Millar – on loan at Kilmarnock – is set to face his former Reds under-23 boss Steven Gerrard on Saturday when he travels to Ibrox to take on Rangers.

And ahead of the game, Millar has hailed the influence that Gerrard’s management has had on his career, The Scottish Sun reports.

The 19-year-old worked under Gerrard last season before the ex-Liverpool legend took the job at Rangers. And Millar believes Gerrard’s coaching has helped him progress.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Millar said: “Steven Gerrard was my coach last year and he was big for me. He helped me a lot, and I always say I’m very grateful for everything he’s done for my career.”

Millar was also keen to add that Gerrard was not afraid to drop him. The Canada international was going through a rough patch of form by his own admission but was still surprised when he was dropped.

But Gerrard’s decision motivated Millar to get back in the side and return to his best form.

He added: “I like coaches who aren’t too soft and also not too hard, that works best for me. There was a time at Liverpool when I wasn’t playing well and Gerrard just dropped me. I was shocked because I’d never been dropped before.

“He didn’t say anything when he did it. But Gerrard doing that motivated me to push on. After getting back in I scored in every game until Christmas. Little things like Steven Gerrard trying to push me to get an edge helped me.”

Now at Kilmarnock, Millar scored his first goal in his sixth game the other day and will be hoping to add to this tally when he faces Gerrard.
