Virgil van Dijk has been reviewing some of his best defensive moments for Liverpool.

The Liverpool captain spoke to the Premier League’s YouTube channel about some of his best moments in a Reds shirt, and he reviewed some excellent defensive clips.

Van Dijk discussed a number of iconic scenarios, including one game against Tottenham in 2019 when he expertly defended a two vs one as Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son were bearing down on goal.

Van Dijk explained that his main thought in that moment was to block the pass to Son as he believes the Tottenham man to be one of the best finishers in the Premier League.

Virgil van Dijk praises Heung-Min Son’s finishing

Van Dijk spoke about Son’s finishing ability, claiming that he’s one of the best in the Premier League. The Dutchman also remarked that Son is great at finishing on both feet.

Ultimately, Van Dijk managed to defend this situation well as he pressured Sissoko into taking a shot on his weaker foot which was ultimately off target.

“It all goes very quickly, he could’ve scored that quickly, but in that split second I’m thinking don’t play the ball to Son, I cover that line and I block that line because I think Son is one of the best finishers in the Premier League, left and right footed.

“Knowing that Sissoko was a right-footed player that was the decision I had to make, basic defending but it worked very well.”

Son is one of the best finishers in the Premier League

Van Dijk says he thinks Son is one of the best finishers in the Premier League, and he’s not wrong.

Son is a former Golden Boot winner for a reason, and the stats back it up.

According to stats collated by the BBC, Son was statistically the second-best finisher in the Premier League between 2015 and 2023, behind only Harry Kane.

Van Dijk isn’t the only elite player to have praised Son’s finishing as of late. In fact, Dominic Solanke named Son as the best finisher at Spurs.

“Who is the best finisher at Tottenham?” Solanke was asked.

“I would probably say Sonny. It’s something rare to be so good. Right foot and left foot. Not many players can do that,” Solanke said.

“To be both footed and be great at finishing on both of them is incredible.”

Unfortunately for Tottenham, Son has been out injured as of late, and Spurs have certainly missed their captain as questions are being asked of Ange Postecoglou amid a recent run of poor form.
