Reported Liverpool and Tottenham target Memphis Depay will not be leaving Lyon in January after snapping his anterior cruciate ligament over the weekend – and Gini Wijnaldum has sent him a heartfelt message on Instagram.
The 25-year-old suffered the devastating injury during Saturday’s poor defeat to Rennes, which puts an abrupt halt to what has been an excellent 2019-20 campaign for the ex-Manchester United star.
Indeed, Depay had cropped up on both Tottenham and Liverpool’s shortlists – according to CalcioMercato – after scoring 14 goals in 18 games for Lyon this season. The Lyon skipper has also scored three times for his country this season.

It was believed that Liverpool and Spurs had to spend £42million to bring the 51-time Netherlands international back to the Premier League, but it is clear Depay will be going nowhere in January after his injury.
Depay is yet to post on social media following the injury, which Lyon sporting director Juninho has claimed could put Depay in doubt for Euro 2020 next summer – a tournament he worked so hard to push the Netherlands towards.
His international teammate, Wijnaldum, sent him an emotional message on Instagram after hearing the news. It is not only a blow for Lyon, Depay and The Netherlands, but also for Liverpool and Spurs – given that they wanted the mercurial talent.
