Gjanni Alioski played 90 minutes as North Macedonia qualified for their first ever major tournament with a 1-0 play-off win over Georgia on Thursday night – prompting reaction from Leeds stars and a Liverpool player on Instagram.

Alioski, 28, has been in and out of the Leeds side this season following the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League. Having entered the final year of his contract at Elland Road, his future is somewhat in doubt.

However, his form on the international stage is so much more consistent. On Thursday night, he clocked up his 39th cap for North Macedonia – as they were tasked with beating Georgia to qualify for Euro 2021 next summer.

Alioski lasted the entire 90 minutes as Macedonia saw off the challenge of Georgia to progress, with veteran Goran Pandev scoring the only goal of the match. Alioski posted on Instagram after the 1-0 win.

Pandev netted just before the hour mark and sent Macedonia into pandemonium, which was matched at the full-time whistle. The nation’s manager was bombarded in a press conference by the players afterwards, too.

Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri reacted to Alioski’s Instagram, commenting: “congratulations brother, well done.” Leeds stars Luke Ayling, Tyler Roberts and Pascal Struijk responded, as did Barry Douglas: “Come on.”
