4 headers, 99 passes: £71,000-a-week Liverpool warrior proves worth to Klopp in World Cup win
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate was in action for France last night and he showcased why Jurgen Klopp must use him more often.
The former RB Leipzig star has spent some time out injured this season but he’s also spent a lot of time out of favour.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has called upon other options during 2022/23 and he’d have been impressed with Konate last night.
France are the holders of the World Cup and they kicked off their campaign with a classy 4-1 victory over Australia.
Konate partnered with Dayot Upamecano at the heart of a back four and he didn’t disappoint.
The 23-year-old actually drew some criticism from some sections of the French media but the stats show he did pretty well.
France fell behind against the Aussies but fought their way back to flex their title credentials once again.
Olivier Giroud bagged a brace, with Adrien Rabiot and Kylian Mbappe – who else – also getting among the goals.
Defensively, France were pretty sound though and Konate highlighted just why he was given the nod by Didier Deschamps.
According to Who Scored, Konate won four aerial challenges and had 115 touches of the ball during the 90 minutes.
The Liverpool star also made four clearances and completed one tackle and one interception throughout the game.
His passing was also good and clearly playing alongside Virgil van Dijk on a regular basis has made an impact on his game.
Konate made 99 passes with only Upamecano completing more during the win.
Konate shows Liverpool boss why he has to play
Once the World Cup is over, Klopp will have a decision to make ahead of Liverpool’s first game back.
Konate hasn’t played much this season but now he’s fully fit, he definitely deserves a run in the Reds’ team.
Last night he showed maturity beyond his tender years and it’s fair to say that he’s supremely strong.
Konate looks like being a very good player for France at the World Cup, with his defensive numbers pretty sound against Australia.
Klopp will have been an intrigued spectator last night and he will have been delighted with what he saw from the centre-back.
Konate produced the goods last night and after this World Cup, he deserves a proper run in the team at Anfield.
