Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate discusses incident with Manchester United star Fred

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has told the club’s official website that his incident with Manchester United midfielder Fred was “funny”, and that he was simply protecting his “family”.

Konate, 22, was a surprise inclusion in Liverpool’s side at Old Trafford in October – a game which the Reds won, quite incredibly, 5-0. The summer signing was absolutely sensational.

During the game, the two sides came to blows and an angry Fred was seen confronting Konate. But images after the match were deemed hilarious by Liverpool fans watching on – and fans of other clubs.

Konate, standing at 6ft 4in, easily held off an aggressive Fred – laughing at the Manchester United man when he confronted the defender. Of course, the photo looks even better, given Fred is 5ft 7in.

Speaking on Liverpool’s website, Konate recalled the incident with £47million (BBC) Manchester United signing Fred. He said many of his friends sent him videos of the moment after the game.

“I don’t know why I did this; it was natural,” Konate said. “I received so many messages, maybe 50 times my friends sent me the videos. I said, ‘No!’ Because it was natural, you know. But yes, it was funny. I just protect my family.”

Konate on Fred incident: Liverpool star already a fan favourite

Even if the Liverpool star has not been a regular so far, and the likes of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are above him in the pecking order alongside Virgil van Dijk, he is already loved by fans.

The incident with Fred, and his performance in the incredible 5-0 win over Manchester United, certainly has helped. Of course, being Liverpool’s only major summer signing helps, too. Game time will grow, as he gets older.
